NEXUS 3.4 'OREC' JOURNAL

Over the next few weeks, all the students of OREC (400+) will be invited to participate in a Nexus painting.  Each class in the school (20) will have a section of the painting to draw and then paint as smaller collectives, which will then be assembled to form the larger piece.   The painting will be shown at the Oxford Riverside Gallery in May as part of the Nexus exhibition.  It will also be shown to the whole school and to the wider community via projection at the school and at the gallery.  Later the work will be made available by Creative Commons license for use in personal projects, such as posters for personal use, or artwork for T-shirts and so on. 

STAGE 1 - The first stage of this process is almost complete.  Twenty-four groups or collectives have each worked together synchronously as one to produce twenty-four different drawings, each of which have twenty cells  - one for each class in the school.  Now, we are inviting everyone in the school, and the community of Oxford, as part of the wider collective, to vote for their favourite drawing.  The drawing with the most votes will then be used to start Stage 2 of the painting process.  News of each stage of the process will be published on the OREC website and on the Oxford Riverside Gallery Facebook Page.  

The voting is in two rounds. In Round 1 everyone is asked to vote for their favourite of four different drawings in each of six groups.  It has been done this way because research shows that good decisions are not made when there are more than six choices. The winner of each group of drawings will then go into Round 2 for a final deciding vote on Thursday.  Then a vote will be taken on which cell of the drawing is to be allocated to each class for further drawing in Stage 2.

Round 1 voting was completed a few days ago, with the 24 drawings narrowed down to 6.  Then a second round of voting took place to decide on the drawing that would go forward to Stage 2 of the painting.  The votes were:

A random number generator was then used to assign each class to a cell.
Each class will now work as a collective intelligence to complete the drawing of their cell.  When this stage is complete, the palette will be chosen and the colour applied.

Over 90 palettes were submitted by the students of OREC; then in the first round of voting on the school website this was reduced to 18 palettes.

After three rounds of voting in Stage 2, a colour palette was chosen.  The voting was done via the school website, but with participation of the wider community via the Facebook page and website of Oxford Riverside Gallery.

6/3/16   STAGE 3    Drawing and painting of 20 cells

In Stage 1 a 20 cell drawing was chosen by a series of votes.  Each of these cells corresponds to a group of children in the school, from Grade Primary to Grade 12.  In the video (right) you can see one group (Grade 6A) drawing and then painting their cell with the colour palette chosen in Stage 2.

As we have now completed all the sections of the painting, I am planning an art intervention of the work: taking over the home page of the website of Oxford Regional Education Centre.
